Concerns Over Confiscation Of Newspaper Computer

The IFJ joins concerned journalists in Mongolia in condemning the confiscation of a newspaper’s main computer, which contains data regarding the paper's activities and, crucially, confidential sources.

Globe International is implementing a project titled Monitoring Press Freedom and  Supporting Independent Media in Mongolia with the support of Open Society Institute based in London.
The main goal of this 2-year project is to protect the rights and independence of journalists by monitoring threats and attacks on journalists and media organisations thus contributing to promoting greater media freedom. Globe International has been monitoring the free expression violations since October 2005 with OSI Network Media Program support, and we registered 157 cases against media and journalists.

Globe International is implementing five-month project designed to initiate media legal reform in Mongolia with the support The Asia Foundation.
The project’s goal is to contribute to the development of good and accountable governance through promoting the legal supportive media that is able to take greater contribution to the consolidation of democracy in Mongolia.

Globe International, a Mongolian NGO has completed the project “Defamation and Censorship” under the US Embassy grant. The project implemented from October 1, 2009 to February 15, 2010.

Globe International, a Mongolian NGO has organized a seminar “Defamation and Censorship” on February 9, 2010 at Puma Imperial Hotel.  In total, 32 participants representing media, journalists, lawyers and NGOs attended the seminar.

Globe International is starting new project   titled  “Defamation and Censorship”  funded by the Embassy of  the United states, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The proposed project is aimed at contributing to the dispensation of justice and democratization in Mongolia by protecting the rights of journalists to practice their profession through exposing the facts of censorship and nexus of defamation and censorship, reinforcing discussions on how defamatory legislation and use of the defamation laws affect the journalists’ rights’ and  encourage self-censorship among the journalists

The Monitoring was carried out from July 1, 2008 through July 8, 2008 involving eleven TV channels and four daily newspapers under following three stages;

The Glob International NGO has organized a measure “The 1st of July: Test of Press Freedom” to develop a free discussion which was attended by journalists, reporters, leadership of media means organizations and civil society representatives.

An incident of July 1, 2008 was the first ever extraordinary event shocking the public in the history of Mongolia since choosing the democratic system with an appearance of confrontation situation in the society.

A Press Freedom Award has been bestowed on some journalists and media staffs who made valuable contribution to operatively report on an incident of July 1, 2008, which was a test of Mongolia’s democracy and freedom of expression. Those award winners have demonstrated a professional courage to deliver the truth to the public.
Final Conclusion of Monitoring on Presidential Election

Globe International NGO carried out a systematic monitoring of the media coverage of the May 24 presidential election. The opponents were MPRP's candidate N.Enkhbayar, current President of Mongolia, and the DP's candidate, Ts.Elbegdorj MP. Monitoring was supported by the Open Society Forum in the context of “Civil Society Monitoring Network" and is to cover the last two weeks of media campaigning by the candidates via Mongolia's National Public Broadcasting Television, UBS, TV-5, TV-9 and TV channel 25.
