World Press Freedom Day 2026: Multi-stakeholder discussion held on “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security”

Ahead of World Press Freedom Day 2026, the National Freedom of Expression Network organized a discussion today at the Press Institute’s Information Center under the theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.”

The discussion was organized with the support of the UNESCO East Asia Regional Office and the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO. Opening remarks were delivered by Ina Marčiulionytė, Ambassador of the European Union to Mongolia; B. Chinükhei, Secretary-General of the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO; and Kh. Naranjargal, Chair of the Board of the Globe International Center.

Video messages were sent by Jaap van Hierden, UN Resident Representative, and Shahbaz Khan, Director of the UNESCO East Asia Regional Office. In his message, Professor Shahbaz Khan emphasized:

“This year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, ‘Building a Peaceful Future,’ carries a clear and important message. Without truth, peace cannot be built. Without free and independent journalism, truth cannot exist.

When journalists work under pressure, fear, and without protection, public trust cannot remain stable. Press freedom is not merely an issue for the media sector — it is a cornerstone of democratic society.”

During the event, participants were introduced to UNESCO’s 2022/2025 World Trends Report, “Journalism: Building a Peaceful World,” as well as a study on the challenges and conditions restricting journalists’ safety and the public’s right to know.

The discussion called attention to the shrinking space for freedom of expression and covered topics including press freedom for human rights, development, and security, as well as the public’s right to know and the obligation of public officials to provide information.

At the event, the Globe International Center presented the “For Truth Award 2025” to G. Ulsbold, commentator at Eagle TV.

The National Freedom of Expression Network also introduced a draft statement addressed to lawmakers.
