“Protecting civic space through legal advocacy and editorial empowerment” Project in the Preparation Phase

The Globe International Center, with the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), is implementing the project “Protecting civic space through legal advocacy and editorial empowerment” starting from August 1, 2025, and is currently in its preparatory stage.

The project aims to protect fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, the right to information, and freedom of the press. It seeks to enhance the legal knowledge and capacity of journalists, media professionals, and civil society representatives, and to safeguard and expand the shrinking civic space through research-based and evidence-driven dialogues.

Within the framework of the project, an information package will be prepared for decision-makers and policy makers, providing them with a foundation to address issues concerning freedom of expression, press freedom, and civic space in an effective, rights-based, and enabling manner. In addition, a “Training with films” will be organized for journalists and media professionals. This training will use a film focusing on journalists’ professional rights and strategic litigation as a basis for discussions, with the participation of lawyers and psychologists — a unique feature of this activity.

Furthermore, the project will convene dialogues involving civil society organizations, lawyers, and media representatives. Based on the outcomes of these discussions, recommendations will be developed to contribute to improving the legal environment. These recommendations will also incorporate the insights and advice of international lawyers, researchers, and experts.
