Chuluunbaatar D. has been released on bail

Mr.Chuluunbaatar Dolgor, Editor-in-Chief of daily newspaper Ulaanbaatar Times has been released on bail on 22nd of July, 2011 on the grounds of poor health.  Chuluunbaatar Dolgor was arrested on 24 March 2011 and put in Detention Center No 461. On April 7, 2011, he was indicted for allegedly “illegal privatization and serious damage of public property.”

This report aims to highlight the current situation of how Mongolian journalists exercise their professional rights and what enabling environments exist for them to fulfill their duties to the public in a fair and responsible manner.

2010 was a year with significant legal media developments. All of the criteria, such as development of new technology, reform of traditional media, rapid progress in modern media and more media outlets (especially broadcasters), have determined the need and demand.
Globe International celebrated the World Press Freedom day 2011

Globe International, a Mongolian NGO celebrated the WPFR on May 3, 2011 at the OSF Conference Room,  under slogan “Freedom To Journalists!” and it was attended by 55 journalists and media practitioners.  The event was moderated by G.Galaarid, Globe International Board Chairman. The meeting participants commerated the killed in 2010 journalists in other countries.
Completed the project titled “Enabling Environment for Free and Independent Media”

Globe International was awarded a grant in the amount of 6,615 USD for the project “Enabling Environment for a Free and Independent Media” in July 2010.  The purpose of this 5-month project is to contribute to the development of good and accountable governance by promoting supportive legal media able to significantly contribute to the consolidation of democracy in Mongolia.
Discussion on “Media Legal Environment and Challenges”

On November 19, 2010, Globe International NGO organized a round table meeting entitled “Media Legal Environment and Challenges” in the “A” hall of the “Khangarid” palace of the Ulaanbaatar City Administration Office. This meeting was held in frames of a project called “Enabling Environment for Free and Independent Media” financed by the Asia Foundation of the USA.
Globe International protests the use of criminal defamation law against journalist

Globe International NGO organized a Press conference on December 22 at 2.00 p.m. at the Mongol News company`s Conference hall and made a statement on the Zuunii Medee newspaper`s case. More than 20 reporters from media organizations attended the press conference, in which Head of Globe International Ms. Kh.Naranjargal, Responsible Secretary of Zuunii Medee newspaper Mr. B.Erdenesolongo and attorney Mr. Ts.Mongol made statements.
Investigative Reporter Faces Criminal Charges in Mongolia

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is concerned about the safety of a journalist in Mongolia who is facing criminal charges after publishing a news report on November 8 which implicates a well-known Mongolian businessman in criminal activity.

Zuunii Medee, the newspaper which published the report, has asked Globe International to assist in protecting journalist Bolormaa Damdinsuren and in providing legal assistance.

A video training

A video training, “In case your professional rights are violated…” dedicated to local media workers, was held on October 13-14, 2010 in the distance training center at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Organized by Globe International NGO, the training was attended by a total of 86 journalists and media equipment operators from Zavkhan, Dundgobi, Ovorkhangai, Khentii, Darkhan-Uul, Orkhon, Dornogobi, Gobi-Altai, Dornod, Sukhbaatar, Tov and Bayankhongor provinces.
