The court’s preliminary hearing on restriction to journalist N.Unurtsetseg on professional activities and fined penalty of limitation of free travel right is leading to illegal undue restrictions on journalistic activities for Mongolian journalism.

The General Judiciary Council of Mongolia filed a complaint with the investigative body due to journalist N.Unurtsetseg, chief-editor of the zarig.mn newsite operating in Mongolia was posting an article on her personal account on Facebook saying that, it is inhumane to continue a court hearing in which an elderly person is participating for many hours.

Accordingly, journalist N.Unurtsetseg was charged with the crime of "Spreading false information" under Article 13.14 of the Criminal Code. According to this article, "sanction for public dissemination of clearly false information that harms a person's honor, reputation, or business reputation of a legal entity, a fine of four hundred and fifty units to one thousand three hundred units, or a term of two hundred and forty hours to seven hundred and twenty hours performing community service or penalty of limitation of free travel right for a period of one to three months will be charged”

Globe International Center deeply condemns a physical harassment committed by a certain police officer against N.Unurtsetseg, a female journalist of zarig.mn news site. This incident has been occurred while the journalist was under an investigation by the police based on a complaint lodged by a high-profile public official.

Bolormaa’s family members, friends, relatives, co-workers, the journalism community and the public are anxious for Police to investigate and report on her sudden death.

Undesnii Shuudan (National Post), a daily newspaper, also published two articles titled: “960 billion hidden behind an Amnesty Law” and “Private companies to be cheated by partnership” in issues No.156 and No.157 on August 19 and 20, 2015.

Mongolian officials file criminal defamation charges against provincial journalists

Globe International Center (GIC) is deeply concerned about criminal defamation charges brought against two provincial journalists - N.Munkhtur, from Orkhon province and S. Ankhbayar from Uvs province - based on complaints filed by the Chairmen of the Citizens Representative Khural. Even though the articles were in the public interest, the two journalists are being accused of defamation through online and social media.
Researcher fined, charged with defamation for criticising Mongolian minister on Twitter

The former minister of Road and Transportation, Mr. A. Gansukh, has filed a criminal lawsuit against Mr. L. Davaapil for defaming him through social media. A first instance court hearing was held in December 2014 during which the accused was ordered to pay a 9.7 mln. MNT (approx. US$5,200) fine in compensation, in accordance with the Criminal Code, provision 111.2; the amount is 51 times higher than the minimum wage.
