GIC condemns District Court over fines and criminal defamation charges leveled against Terguun newspaper journalists

On September 23, 2013 the Chingeltei District Court reviewed the criminal case against three Terguun newspaper journalists according to article 111.2 of the Criminal Code and imposed fines of 29 mln.MNT (approx.US$17.000) on them, instructing that "inability to pay the fines would result in a 3 year prison sentence."

Globe International is deeply concerned about the criminal defamation charges brought against female journalist D.Bolormaa from Zuunii Medee (Century News) daily newspaper. The Sukhbaatar District Court convicted the journalist under Article 111/2 of the Mongolian Criminal Code and sentenced her to pay compensation 61 times higher than the minimum wage (approx. US$6.200).

A criminal defamation case has launched against TV9 channel and its crew of the documentary that disclosed the corruption facts. TV9 Channel aired a corruption story about the illegal privatization of “Ulaanbaatar” printing`s building located in the city center in a documentary titled “Detective-2” on December 17, 2011.
