In 2016 Globe International Centre’s annual Media Freedom Award “For the Truth!” honored Luntan Bolormaa, who died on 21 November 2015. The Award was given to her brother Luntan Batbayar during the Roundtable “Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms. This is Your Right!” held on 3 May 2016 on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.
A founder and editor-in-chief of the "Mongolian Mining" journal Bolormaa Luntan was found dead in her apartment on November 21.
Luntan Bolormaa, a well-known and recognized investigative reporter and publicist, was found dead at her home. The reasons for her death still remain unknown. Sources said that the National Institute of Forensic Science conducted an autopsy of Luntan Bolormaa and concluded that she died due to a brain hemorrhage caused by a concussion in the occipital bone. Police are continuing their investigation into Bolormaa’s death.
She was a Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Mongolian Mining Journal. Bolormaa published mainly on economic, political, business, and mining issues. Moreover, she managed the non-governmental organization, “Journalism for Development,” which trained and supported journalists in reporting on economic and mining related issues.
Globe International Center launched the Media Freedom Award in 2009. First winners of the Award were eight journalists and reporters who were attacked and injured during coverages from the post-election riot in July 1, 2008. Since then, Globe International Center’s Media Freedom Award is given annually to those journalists and media professionals who contribute to ensuring media freedom, serve public interests or face pressure, intimidation and legal proceedings for reporting in the public interest.
