On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Globe International Center in collaboration with the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, with the support of the National Human Rights Commission, the European Union, and the Open Society Forum organizing a multidisciplinary discussion "A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis" on May 3, 2024 at 10:00-13:00 in the conference hall of the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs.
Mrs. Kh.Naranjargal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Globe International Center, Mr. Tapan Mishra, Country Representative of UN in Mongolia, H.E. Ms Axelle Nicaise, Ambassador of the EU to Mongolia and Mr. N. Myagmar, State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs will gave an opening speeches.
Mr. B.Bilegdemberel, Head of the Digital Development Policy Implementation Coordination Department of the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, Mrs. S.Dondov, a member of the National Human Rights Commission and Mr. L.Galbaatar, a lawyer and researcher of the Globe International Center will make presentations at the discussion.
After main presentations, there will be organized a panel discussion on the topic of "Professional activities of journalism on climate change and air pollution" with the participation of representatives of the National Human Rights Commission, the Ecological Police Service of the National Police Agency, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the coordinators of the "Green Earth" Club of environmental journalists at the Press followed by questions and answers.
It the Concept note for World Press Freedom Day 2024 done by UNESCO noticed “Sustainable development is in jeopardy. The triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and air pollution—along with their connections to public health issues, the need to strengthen democracy, to tackle dis-/misinformation on digital platforms, among other issues have become major challenges for humanity. The information ecosystem has a key role to play in responding to this existential crisis. The access to reliable information and the importance of strengthening independent environ- mental and scientific journalism is more critical than ever.” That is why, in 2024, World Press Freedom Day will be dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis.
30 years have passed since the first World Press Freedom Day celebration in 1994 and of the historic Santiago Declaration adopted during the “Seminar on the Development of Media and Democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean” (May 6, 1994)
At the end of the event, there will be presented the "For the Truth" annual award of the Globe International Center for 16th time. “For the Truth” award is initiated by The Globe International Center to encourage journalists and media organizations who have shown professional courage in order to tell the truth to the public and have contributed to ensuring freedom of the press.
