46th ABU General Assembly held in Ulaanbaatar

46th Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union /ABU/ General Assembly was successfully organized 5-6 October, 2009 in Ulaanbaatar. The Prime Minister of Mongolia S.Bayar gave a speech at the opening ceremony and congratulated officials and guests attended there, including Yoshinori Imai, president of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU); Jean Reveillon, director-general of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU); David Astley, the ABU secretary-general for their participation in the General Assembly.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the country’s active foreign policy towards peace and security as well as economic engagement in Asia-Pacific region. According to him, significant achievements in Mongolia’s shift into democracy and free market are private sector based open economy dominated by industrial and mining spheres and free media recognized by both the Government and public. In addition, the Premier underlined challenges brought by globalization and expressed a hope on contribution of international media, including ABU, in their resolution.

One of the prominent events during 46th ABU General Assembly was the "ABU Prize-2009" ceremony in the Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, designed to select the best TV and radio programs. The event was organized by the ABU.

This year, 122 international TV and 70 radio programs competed for the "ABU Prize-2009". Four programs in each category were selected in the first round. At the final results, two nominations were won by Mongolian National Broadcasting - Mongolian National Public Radio and Television, namely, Special Jury Prize for the best Radio program and Prize for the best Television Children Program.

The participants at the 46th ABU General Assembly have adopted Ulaanbaatar Declaration on climate change.
