Ms. L. Munkhbayasgalan on censorship

L.Munkhbayasgalan, Odriin onin (Daily News), daily

Censorship is not only the arrest or imprisonment of journalists. I understand it as poor working conditions, not publishing the journalists’ materials and restricting freedom of expression. A few years ago we used to understand that censorship existed, if journalists were arrested or imprisoned. Now we are aware of that there are many types of censorship such as psychological abuse, restriction of our freedom and intervening in our professional activities.

Censorship has increased since 2004. Before this time, when the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party was ruling the country, there were 3 cases of arrests and newspaper closures. Since 2004, when 2 major political parties earned equal seats in the Parliament, we have been facing more censorship through psychological pressure, obstacles to work, and dealing with media owners. Personally I face censorship every day.
