On September 28, T. Bayasgalan, reporter for the “7 day Darkhan,” newspaper, was assaulted by a market vendor while he was reporting the alleged unlawful business of selling pine nuts in the central market of Darkhan-Uul province 200 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
Mr B. Sandagdorj, vendor of the “Tun,” company, tied the reporter’s hands behind his back when he asked the vendor to show the permission documents for selling pine nuts and requested to see the pine nuts in the car. Sandagdorj told to the reporter, “You have no right to see it. It is a secret of the organization”.
While holding the reporter’s hands, other vendors who were also selling the nuts with Sandagdorj took the nuts into the car and left with him.
According to the “Tun,” company’s head Z. Tsengel, the company didn’t have any permission for gathering and selling the nuts but it is possible that V. Sandagdorj was selling the nuts for himself.
V. Sandagdorj has not appeared at the market since he assaulted the reporter. Vendor Sh.Myadag, who witnessed the event said, “At first they talked normally but when the young man asked to see the permission, Sandagdorj jumped from his counter and held his hands for almost 20 minutes behind his back. While the other two men who also sold the nuts at the market, took the nuts into the car and ran away with Sandagdorj.”
Pine trees are not spread throughout Mongolia and it is only type of tree which pine nuts grow from. For this reason in 1995 the Pine trees was put onto the list of rare plants and trees in Mongolia.
In the 2006 report of Darkhan-Uul province’s Environmental Department, it was stated that people who gather the nuts, make several harmful effects to the environment such as cutting down rare and young trees, starting fires from the camps where they are living, destroying the nearest places when carrying the nuts from the forest with large vans and by destroying the wood they scare off birds and animals. In 2006 the offences on gathering and selling the nuts without permission has not decreased compared to 2005.
Globe action:
Globe issued a media release on the violation of the concerning laws and aired it through “Tsuurai,” radio and “Lkha” television which operates in Darkhan-Uul province and also Orkhon radio of Orkhon province.
