It is Necessary to Raise Men's Gender Issues in Education

Ongoing training for journalists on "Gender sensitive journalism" was held on May 25-26 and June 8, at the Mongolian Press Institute. During the training representatives of NGOs who work for human rights as well as researchers and teachers of the National University of Mongolian presented lectures on "Basic concepts of gender", "Regular concepts of gender in media and its consequences", "Media and types of gender discrimination" Journalists also participated in analyzing some media works and news related to these concepts.

The training was organized by the National Human Rights Commission, UN's project for supporting the realization of women's rights and Youth Development Gender Center.

According to L. Nomin, coordinator of the UN's project for supporting the realization of women's rights, "The training was organized to meet the purposes such as establishing a constant network of journalists who specialize on gender and women's issues, to enhance gender sensitiveness in media while at the same time upgrading the journalists" skills to do analyses on this issue; also to prepare journalists who will discuss public opinions on the 5th report of the Convention on eliminating all types of women discrimination.

According to Mrs. Ts. Narantsetseg, head of the Youth Development Gender Center,

Gender translates into the Mongolian language as a sex. We view this word from social relations like "sex plus society". People tend to understand that gender only concerns women issues. This is because the first raised gender issue was women's rights issues. Nowadays due to less education, men cannot find work and it is increasing certain bad habits. This is a widespread phenomenon. Therefore it is necessary to raise men's gender issues in education.

"Journalists play a main role in establishing appropriate relations and disseminating correct news and information, regardless of sex. Therefore we organized this seminar for defining differences in every field of society and how it is curbing the development of our society, its harmful effects, why it is effecting poverty, how the differences in receiving resources are affecting social development and analyzing them and changing social tendency."
