Globe International NGO in cooperation with ZORIG Foundation has organized a round table Against Censorship!!! on 2 May of 2006 at the meeting hall of the National Legal Center of Mongolia.
AGAINST CENSOSHIP!!! was the message to address to the Mongolian authorities.
Although the 1998 Media Freedom Law bans the censorship is existed and the journalists are highly self-censored according to a 2004 survey of Globe International conducted among 200 journalists working in news and current affairs. Mongolian media and journalists are experiencing many difficulties in exercising their professional duties.
During the round table discussion the participants were informed in the origin and essence of a censorship, it�s types, censorship and legal environment in Mongolia, difficulties facing journalists in exercising their professional duties. Globe International also featured its new web portal on monitoring of free expression violations in Mongolia.
Round table participants discussed and adopted A Call to address to the President, Parliament and Government, media owners and Confederation of Mongolian Journalists to take urgent actions on creation of more favorable envitonmnet for media freedom and development of an efficient media self-regulation. The organisers of the round table believe that Call will urge the Mongolian Government to respect for the journalists rights in their news gathering and dissemination without any censhorship and to efficiently implement the provisions of the National Human Rights Programme, which obliges the Mongolian Government to pass the legislation on Freedom of Iinformation, Protection of Confidential Sources and make ammendments to the strict secrecy and defamatory legislation.
Globe International, Mongolian NGO founded 1999 is actively working in empowerment of the public through their right to know, and promote the freedoms of expression, information and media. Since October 2005 Globe International NGO has been implementing the free expression violation monitoring aimed to accurately analyze the condition of freedom of expression in Mongolian media.
Zorig Foundatation is a non-profit, non governmental organization whose main mission is to advance formation of democractic society and support political reforms in Mongola, founded 1998, after the murder of Sanjaasurengiin Zorig, a member of the Mongolian Parliament.
