May 3: World Press Freedom Day, Mongolia - Safe to speak!

Globe International Centre, Mongolian free expression NGO and the Mongolian Journalists Association under support of Open Society Forum, Mongolia marked the World Press Freedom Day 2013 on May 1, 2012 at the OSF Conference Hall. It gathered more than 75 politicians, officials, international organisations, NGOs, journalists and media practitioners.

Today, the world is marking the 20th anniversary of the WPFD. Windhoek Declaration has been adopted in May 3, 1991 and it was first officially proclaimed during the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. The UN calls its State Parties to focus the WPFD 2013 on the theme of “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media” and puts the spotlight in particular on the issues of safety of journalists, combating impunity for crimes against freedom of expression, and securing a free and open Internet as the precondition for safety online.

Globe International organized discussion titled “Are defamation and insult crime?”

The discussion titled “Are defamation and insult crime?” was held on December 12, 2012 at the Citizens` Hall under the Office of the President. It was supported by US Embassy in Ulaanbaatar and co-organized by Globe International, Office of the President, Legal Standing committee and State Structure`s Standing committee, in the framework of the Ask! campaign, during which all election candidates were inquired about their view of the decriminalization of press offences, implemented since June, 2012 with the IFEX.
