This statement on issues of the freedoms of opinion and expression is prepared by Globe International Center, a Mongolian NGO and is delivered on behalf of the Mongolian Human Rights NGO Forum. The topic was not raised at the 2010 UPR, but free expression situation is becoming alarming in the country due to the current legal and regulatory conditions. The issues are not raised in the current National report.

Globe International Center is holding a Round table named “Freedom of Expression is a Human Right” on the occasion of the May 3 - World Press Freedom Day (WPFD). The event is scheduled on May 3, 2015 in the conference hall of the Open Society, Mongolia at 2 pm. The event will gather various stakeholders, including media representatives, politicians, lawyers, public officers, civil society and international organizations.

The project conducted two rapid monthly media campaigns in collaboration with eight aimag’s media outlets with a goal to raise awareness of the target communities on the Law  on FOI and right to information and  to promote transparency and integrity of  the local government through open public discussion in  2013 and  2014.
Mongolian officials file criminal defamation charges against provincial journalists

Globe International Center (GIC) is deeply concerned about criminal defamation charges brought against two provincial journalists - N.Munkhtur, from Orkhon province and S. Ankhbayar from Uvs province - based on complaints filed by the Chairmen of the Citizens Representative Khural. Even though the articles were in the public interest, the two journalists are being accused of defamation through online and social media.
