A State-owned Enterprise Attempts to Impose Economic Censorship on a Media Outlet

On 22 April 2021, Ulziibayar Sanjaajav, a female journalist of Ugluunii Sonin (Morning Newspaper) daily newspaper published an article titled ‘Uranium hazards are destroying Dornogovi’s migratory gazelles’ for the newspaper’s section titled ‘Mother nature and responsible mining.’ Based on the article, a state-owned company called ‘Mon-Atom’ claimed that the newspaper injured their business reputation by spreading false and misleading information.

Within the program, Empowering Youth and Women Journalists, being implemented by the International Republic Institute (IRI) with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Globe International Center organized the online forum Election and Media, thereby developing strategies to collaborate, based on the suggestions made by the participants of the forum.
Media Freedom Report 2020 is Available Now

We are pleased to present to you our recurrent report on the state of media freedom in Mongolia. According to the Reporters without Borders (RSF) 2021 World Press Freedom Index, Mongolia is ranked at the 68th place out of 180 countries, up to 5 places from the last year, meaning that Mongolia remains a country having issues around press freedom. As of the end of 2019, there were around 500 registered media outlets that employ nearly 4750 people, half of which are journalists and creative staff, according to the Mongolian Press Institute survey.
Inception Meeting for MASAM II Project Held with UB Districts’ Representatives

The Globe International Center (GIC) has been implementing the project, The Mainstreaming Social Accountability for Improved Transparency and Participation in Mongolia, or the MASAM II project, along with World Vision Mongolia and Save the Children. On July 1, with the other two implementing partners, GIC held the project’s inception meeting among its partners from all the nine districts of Ulaanbaatar, which saw more than 50 representatives attending.
