Globe International has completed a six-months project titled “Protecting the Journalists’ Confidential Sources and Repealing the Criminal Defamatory Legislation’. The project was ran from September 30, 2007 till April 30, 2008 by a project staff consisted from three persons in cooperation with two Draft Legislation Teams involved in total 10 members.

Civil servant blocks journalist’s attempt to broadcast news

On January 16, 2008, a meeting was held at the State Center for Civil Registration in Bayan-Ulgii to discuss printing equipment that had been out of commission for a month.
During the meeting, responsibility for the problem was placed on I. Lazat, the officer in charge of passport issues, and finance officer B. Saule.

Mongolia’s defamation law provisions inadequately clarified

The Supreme Court of Mongolia has issued interpretations of provisions of the Law of Defamation in order to provide a uniform understanding and thus ensure the correct application of the legislation.

The interpretations apply to Articles 110 and 111 of the Mongolian Criminal Code and primarily involve legal definitions pertaining to a range of defamation terms, including “reputation”, “honor”, “insulting”, “libelous defamation” and “damage”.

Protecting Journalists’ Confidential Sources and Repealing the Criminal Defamation Legislation

Globe International is launching a six-month project from October 1, 2007, “Protecting Journalists’ Confidential Sources and Repealing the Criminal Defamation Legislation”, to provide greater protection for Mongolia’s media.

The project, funded by the US Embassy, is aimed at promoting the media’s role in contributing to transparent and accountable governance and curbing corruption by improving legal protections for reporters.

The overall objective of the project is to draft legislation on the protection of journalists’ sources and to make amendments to Mongolia’s Criminal Law pertaining to defamation to make the legislation consistent with international standards.
